Raised in Kilburn, North West London, by her Ghanaian father and Irish mother, Kanya, the youngest daughter of nine children and grew up listening to and being inspired by black music. Kanya became entrepreneurial at a very young age doing paper rounds and selling whistles at the Notting Hill Carnival, where she learnt the value of money by opening up a bank account and saving every penny. Kanya continued her entrepreneurial journey by first investing in property, which led to financing the first MOBO Awards. The MOBO Awards were born of an idea back in 1995. After being a lifelong fan of music and growing up listening to a wide variety of artists across a range of genres, she wondered why there wasn’t a mainstream platform for music with origins in black heritage and began arranging some live events in her spare time to address this gap. The audience response was amazing and it became clear that there was scope for developing a showcase for this type of music. She remortgaged my home in order to pay for the broadcast of the first show. Kanya says: “Whilst I cannot claim that I could ever have imagined that it would become the huge success that it is today, I did have an innate self-belief, perseverance and, above all, passion for what I was creating with the MOBO Awards.
