4 February 2010 Local Fundraising Drive Rallies Singaporeans To Support World Vision’s Earthquake Relief Work In Haiti Local peacebuilding social enterprise Café Diplo organised an emergency charity concert last Saturday (Jan 30) at City Square Mall to raise funds towards humanitarian relief efforts in earthquake-stricken Haiti. Musicians who agreed to perform pro bono at the event – titled Haiti Haiti – included former Singapore Idol vocal coach Babes Conde, veteran singer Robert Fernando, popular entertainer Cat Ong, Rai from local acoustic duo Jack & Rai (also World Vision Singapore Goodwill Ambassadors), up-and-coming singers Tiffanie Widjaja, Inch Chua and Jon Chong, and Café Diplo Singspirator Syltra Lee. Local radio host Cheryl Miles, who was the emcee for the event, also lent her vocal talents in the finale song “We Are The World.” City Developments Limited (CDL), leading property developer and advocate for Corporate Social Responsibility, gave key support to Café Diplo in organising Haiti Haiti, which was aimed at raising funds towards World Vision’s (WV) relief work in Haiti. In addition to sponsoring City Square Mall as the concert venue, CDL also launched a donation drive amongst staff, which was matched dollar for dollar by the company. In just three days, a total of S$30,000 was raised for WV’s Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund, which will help to provide relief supplies to victims of the Haiti earthquake. Since the disaster struck on Jan 12, WV has provided essential medical supplies to 11 hospitals and set up 2 mobile clinics. Food and non-food relief items such as hygiene kits, blankets, water containers, and shelter materials have been distributed to more than 8,000 people. As a child-focused organization, WV’s key attention is given to children and their caregivers at two recovery facilities. HAITI HAITI 2 To date, almost $40,000 has been raised through the Haiti Haiti fundraising drive. The organisers continue to rally the community to lend their support by donating towards the massive relief work urgently required in Haiti. With the kind support of CDL yet again, Café Diplo has embarked upon putting together a second charity concert to continue the fundraising campaign in support of WV’s work in Haiti. Haiti Haiti 2 is scheduled for Feb 20, 4-6pm at Chinatown Point, and will feature Mandarin pop singers to rally the local Mandarin-speaking community to support the Haitian cause. # # #
